Airport currency exchanges typically charge 7-12% above mid-market rates. On a $1,000 conversion, that's $70-$120 lost to fees. A credit card with no foreign transaction fee often charges 0-1% above mid-market. For a two-week trip with $3,000 in spending, using the right card over airport exchange saves $200-$350.
Good to know
Mid-market rate is your benchmark. The rate on Google or XE is the midpoint between buy and sell rates. You'll never get this rate because every exchange adds margin. But it tells you how much markup you're paying. A 3% spread means the bank keeps $3 of every $100.
Credit cards beat cash exchange for most travelers. Cards with no foreign transaction fee typically offer rates within 1% of mid-market. You also get fraud protection. Airport exchanges and hotel desks are usually the worst options at 5-12% spreads.
ATMs abroad are often the best cash option. International ATMs typically use wholesale rates close to mid-market, plus a flat fee ($3-$5). For $300 withdrawal, a $5 fee is 1.7%. Choose "charge in local currency" to get your bank's rate, not the ATM's inflated conversion.
