Sales tax calculator
Sales tax rates in the US range from 0% (Oregon, Montana) to over 9.5% (California, Tennessee). On a $50,000 car, that's the difference between $0 and $4,750—enough to change which state you buy in.
Good to know
Combined rates are the real number. State rate is just the start. Most places add city, county, or district taxes. A state with 6% might actually charge 8.5% at the register. We let you enter the full combined rate so the number matches reality.
Tax-free shopping exists. Five states (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon) have no statewide sales tax. Some have local taxes; some don't. If you're making a large purchase—car, furniture, appliances—and you live near a tax-free state, it might be worth the drive.
Online shopping changed the game. For years, online retailers didn't collect sales tax unless they had physical presence in your state. That loophole mostly closed in 2018 (South Dakota v. Wayfair). Now, most major retailers collect tax based on your shipping address. The days of tax-free Amazon are mostly over.
